While working on a Flash Actionscript project, I noticed I was wasting tons of time compiling and then waiting for a loading process to occur in the Flash program before I could see results of my test. This compile-&-load process was consuming up to one quarter my time! Plus, during the this 15 second wait I start thinking off task. Mind wandering is where most of us lose the biggest chunk of our productivity, so its especially important to remove such delays.
While a faster computer would help, my cheaper fix was to use my laptop and desktop PC's at the same time, a solution which has worked suprisingly well. I use the laptop to edit the program, and the faster desktop to run and test it. I was able to quickly "connect" the two programs with some macros in such a way that the whole process only requires a key stroke.
Such a two PC system is highly recommended if you find yourself regularly waiting for your computer complete some task, especially when you another computer available.

Want to rip through your Excel work? It takes a little effort but once you learn to use Excel without the mouse, you will be amazed by how fast things will go. You will also be amazed how slow other people seem as they lumber along by mouse.
Below are several "cheat sheets" I have created, just tack them up next to your computer. Focus on learning one keyboard shortcut a day. To learn them effectively, you must actually use the shortcut several times. If you run across any repetitive Excel work, look thru your cheat sheets and pickout any ones that will make the task go faster. You may not save time the first time around, but such repetitive sequences are an excellent opportunity to learn shortcut keys. |

Are you looking for an 20 to 30 percent increase productivity, something that pays back quickly, requires minimal investement, and you can apply to almost every worker in your office? According to many articles and advertisers, all you need to do is setup an extra monitor on your PC. Now that is a no brainer, or is it? The whole things sounds too good to be true to me, so I did a little research to find if this kind of productivity improvement is for real. |
